Reexamining the frustration effect in rats: Aftereffects of surprising reinforcement and nonreinforcement

چکیده
The reinforcement-omission effect (ROE; also called frustration effect), or greater response strength immediately after nonreinforcement (N) than reinforcement (R), has been traditionally interpreted in terms of one of two factors: transient facilitation after N induced by primary frustration or transient suppression after R induced by postconsummatory processes. Three instrumental lever-pressing experiments with rats demonstrated that the ROE can be caused by either factor in isolation, or by both acting simultaneously. The distribution of trials and the interval between N or R and the target response determine which factor would cause the ROE. Both aftereffects decay in time, but the after-N process decays at a slower rate than

Inaccessibility of reinforcement increases persistence and signaling behavior in the fox squirrel (Sciurus niger).
Under natural conditions, wild animals encounter situations where previously rewarded actions do not lead to reinforcement. In the laboratory, a surprising omission of reinforcement induces behavioral and emotional responses described as frustration. Frustration can lead to aggressive behaviors and to the persistence of noneffective responses, but it may also lead to new behavioral responses to...
متن کاملA comparison of the effects of pimozide and nonreinforcement on discriminated operant responding in rats.
Some controversy surrounds the interpretation of the effects of dopamine receptor blocking drugs on conditioned operant responding. To assess the motoric versus the reinforcement-reducing consequences of these compounds, the effects of pimozide (1.0 mg/kg) and nonreinforcement on discriminated operant responding were compared. Rats were trained extensively on a successive discrimination impleme...

Brown and Wanger [Brown, R.T., Wanger, A.R., 1964. Resistance to punishment and extinction following training with shock or nonreinforcement. J. Exp. Psychol. 68, 503-507] investigated rat behaviors with the following features: (1) rats were exposed to reward and punishment at the same time, (2) environment changed and rats relearned, and (3) rats were stochastically exposed to reward and punis...
متن کاملComparing the context specificity of extinction and latent inhibition.
Exposure to a cue alone either before (i.e., latent inhibition treatment) or after (i.e., extinction) the cue is paired with an unconditioned stimulus results in attenuated conditioned responding to the cue. Here we report two experiments in which potential parallels between the context specificity of the effects of extinction and latent inhibition treatments were directly compared in a lick su...
